CHAPTER 26

Tapestry of Trials

“He asked me out on a date, Gavan.” Dedra beamed, her voice bubbling with excitement as she spun in her desk chair, the world whirling around her in a dizzying blur.

“You’re going, right?” Gavan’s voice crackled through the phone, encouragement lacing his tone.

“Of course, I’m going.” Dedra’s giggle echoed off the walls of her room.

“Good for you. I do like the guy. He’s got good energy.” Gavan chuckled.

“I know you do. You make that perfectly clear every time you see him or I say his name,” Dedra said.

“I’m glad he likes one of us and isn’t falling for Angie and her bag of tricks.”

“Boy, you nailed that,” she agreed, her laughter subsiding into a soft sigh. “Oh, I didn’t tell you the news. It’s been quite the past few days.”

“Spill it. What is happening now?” Gavan’s interest was piqued.

Dedra took a moment, letting the gravity of the situation settle. “Kendra is pregnant.”

“What!” Gavan’s exclamation was sharp, a mixture of shock and concern. “Is it that guy from the appliance saga?”

“No, it’s a different story this time,” Dedra said, her voice dropping a notch, the seriousness of the situation seeping into her words.

“Tell me who the father is. You know I can’t stand the suspense.”

“A married man she met at the church she goes to.”

Gavan gasped. “What was she thinking? A married man? Wow! That’s a mess waiting to happen.”

Dedra waited for Gavan to catch his breath, thinking back to the conversation she and Kendra had. “When she told him, he went back to his wife.”

“Of course he did,” Gavan said.

“Donna and I went over in the middle of the night because she was so upset.” She knew what Gavan’s response would be.

“Wait! You went with Donna to check on Kendra after she gave you the cold shoulder? Why?”

Dedra sighed wearily. “I did, and it was for Donna, not Kendra. I hadn’t told Donna what Kendra said to me. I had to tell her when she asked why I didn’t know what was going on. She still thought Kendra and I were going to lunch now and then, and she was telling me everything.”

“Why didn’t you tell her what was going on?”

“I didn’t want to upset her. She’s loving everything with her marriage and pregnancy. I didn’t want to ruin this time for her.”

Gavan emitted a dry laugh. “And you left Kendra to stir that pot. Classic.”

“Kendra did a rather good job. I’ve decided I’m going to stay back and let Donna work it out with her.” If Kendra believed she was involved in Donna’s suggestions, she would balk at them. Angie had convinced her that Dedra didn’t have a place in her life.

“And where is Angie in all this mess? Why didn’t Kendra call her?”

“I can’t answer that. I can only speculate. I think Kendra has finally seen through Angie. At least, I hope she has.” Dedra closed her eyes, hoping the universe would send Kendra her thoughts.

“All this drama is going in your book, correct?” he asked, his tone shifting to professional curiosity.
